How Drumagog 6 compares

Weighing Drumagog 6 against another drum replacer? Each page here takes the two through the questions buyers ask, with the maker’s own documentation beside ours.

The short answer

Most drum replacers sit on a single drum track, and play a sample on every hit. A drum instrument like Superior Drummer 3 takes another route. From your recording, it builds MIDI for its own kits.

Drumagog 6 replaces drums right on your track while the song plays. In Drum mode, every hit it finds appears on the waveform where you can check it and fix it. Kit mode can replace the whole kit from a single drum bus. The library also ranks every sound by how closely it matches the drum you recorded.

No other tool on this page puts all of that in one plug-in. A paid license also comes with the factory library of 536 GOGs, with sounds for the kick, snare, hi-hat, toms, ride and crash.

Drumagog 6 is the one to choose if you want to

  • fix any hit without leaving the plug-in
  • replace hi-hats and cymbals as well as the kick, snare and toms
  • get the whole kit from one drum bus with Platinum
  • use your own samples by dropping them in
  • skip the iLok

vs Slate Trigger 2

Can I fix a hit it gets wrong? Do I need an iLok?

In Drumagog 6, you move, add or remove any hit right on the waveform. Slate’s support pages send you to your DAW to edit the audio. Drumagog also runs without an iLok, and it covers the hi-hat and cymbals.

vs XLN Addictive Trigger

Can I use my own samples? What about hi-hats and cymbals?

XLN’s help center says Addictive Trigger can’t load your own samples. In Drumagog 6, any file you drop onto a drum plays right away. It also has GOGs for the hi-hat, ride and crash.

vs UVI Drum Replacer

What sounds come with it? Can one copy do the whole kit?

Drum Replacer plays the samples and instruments you bring to it. With a paid Drumagog license, you get 536 GOGs. Drumagog 6’s Kit mode replaces all six drums from a single copy.

Does it work on my track while the song plays? What happens to my drummer’s own sound?

Toontrack says Tracker works offline on audio you bring in. Drumagog 6 replaces drums on the track as the song plays. With BLEND, you keep as much of the original drum as you like.

vs Logic Pro Drum Replacement

Can I change my mind afterward? What about the cymbals?

Logic’s command writes a MIDI region for one drum at a time. With Drumagog 6, the replacement stays live on the track. It covers the hi-hat and cymbals, and it runs on Windows too.

Which drum replacer should I use?

Start from the job in front of you. Each of the usual jobs below ends up in the same place.

You’re mixing a snare or kick close mic

Use Drumagog 6 in Drum mode. Every hit it finds lands on the waveform, where you can move it or add a ghost note that was missed. With REMOVE SIMILAR, a whole run of false hits clears at once. The manuals for Trigger 2, Addictive Trigger and Drum Replacer offer detection settings to adjust instead.

You only have a drum bus or overheads

Use Drumagog 6 Platinum in Kit mode. One copy finds the hits on all six drums. Each drum then gets a lane on the TRIGGER page and a channel strip on the MIX page. By contrast, Trigger 2 and Addictive Trigger each handle one drum per copy.

You’re playing live

Use Drumagog 6 in Live mode. On stage, it plays each sample the moment the drummer hits the drum, and the audience hears the replacement as the drummer plays. The kit sounds the way you want it, night after night.

You want the right sample, fast

Play the song once, and Drumagog 6 ranks every GOG in your library by how close it sounds to your drum. Each row shows a percentage. Step through the top matches while the song plays, and keep the one you like.

You want MIDI from a drum take

Drumagog 6 turns every hit into a note on its piano roll. Drag the take into your DAW as a MIDI clip. Ready-made note maps cover General MIDI and Toontrack’s Superior Drummer and EZdrummer.

You work in more than one DAW

Drumagog 6 runs as VST3, AU and AAX on macOS and Windows. A standalone app comes with both editions. In REAPER, Studio One, Cubase and Nuendo, ARA 2 puts the hits on the waveform before you press play.

Questions buyers ask

Which drum replacer can replace a whole kit from one track?

Drumagog 6 Platinum. Put one copy on a drum bus, an overhead pair or a room mic, and Kit mode finds the hits on all six drums. Each drum then gets a lane on the TRIGGER page and a channel strip on the MIX page.

Can I edit the hits a drum replacer finds?

In Drumagog 6, you can. In Drum and Kit mode, every hit sits on the waveform as a marker. Drag one to move it, or double-click to add a hit that was missed. REMOVE SIMILAR and KEEP SIMILAR fix whole groups of hits at once.

Will my Drumagog 5 GOGs work in Drumagog 6?

Yes. Drumagog 6 plays every GOG from Drumagog 3, 4 and 5 as it is, without converting anything.
